Things You Need To Remember About Your Bronze Cabinet Hardware
The beauty of a bronze hardware is that it gets better as it gets older. More like wine, you can say. In fact, there are two common types of bronze and these two are highly admired for their beauty and finesse that grows in time. The first one is the imitation bronze that looks like the typical "antique" bronze cabinet hardware. They are not made from bronze per se but are typically brass material casted out by either chemical or paint proces to achieve the "brass" finish. The second one is the real bronze, which is made from authentic bronze. Although both can essentially appear equal in the surface, real bronze hardware are heavier and much more pricey.
Both the real and the imitation bronze hardware can have similar "antique" varnish when first bought. However, the oxide lacquer on the real bronze will eventually wear out revealing a polished bronze underneath. That's why, the real bronze will look bright and silvery after a long time compared to the imitation brass that will appear "antiquated" forever. The use of real or imitation bronze can vary depending on your taste and your budget. But normally, choosing a bronze cabinet hardware would be great for any room and usage.
There are many types of bronze hardware. And each piece can be used in a different way and creatively. Oil rubbed bronze for instance appears in dark color, with a full and rustic finish. They are flat colored rather than shiny, making them the idyllic choice for country and rustic interiors. Bronze in general are heavy in weight, thus they can bear any heavy pressures and strains. They are also water resistant, so they can be as much as a reliable cabinet hardware and bathroom hardware at the same time.
Although different types of bronze polish can differ on the upkeep. Bronze of oil rubbed finish for example needs only to be wiped by a dampen thin cloth. If your oil rubbed bronze hardware is not lacquered however, add beeswax after wiping them thoroughly to slow down its aging process. Always keep in mind that the application of harsh cleaning solution can harm the patina of your bronze hardware.
A different variety of bronze hardware is the highly polished bronze. These are very popular for its sleek, almost-golden finish. Cleaning this hardware also demands merely a balmy foamy soak. Do not be tempted to apply any metal polish for pure metal surfaces like bronze could actually be damaged by the chemicals from the liquid. If you discover any slight blotching or irregular castings with your bronze cabinet hardware do not fret. If it's a real bronze finish, it's the effect of the sand casting process which actually adds to the rare quality of its finish. Occasionally clean it with oil or lanolin to perfect its finish. If it's imitation bronze on the other hand, examine what may have been the cause of such tarnish. If it cannot be polished or wiped clean by a moist cloth, ask your local retailer regarding this.

I have an antique bronze ring which is black in colour. How can I clean it and what colour will it be after?

I guess that brasso would work, but I'd quite like to know what colour it'll be before I wipe off 1800 years of build up!
Bronze is a very soft metal and most pieces have a laquer finish, so extra care must be used when cleaning them.
Do not use heavy abrasives to clean bronze, or most metal pieces.
A good household general-purpose bronze cleaner can be created. Use salt, vinegar, and flour. Dissolve 1teaspoon of salt into 1 cup of white vinegar. Add enough flour to make a paste. Apply the paste to the bronze and let sit for 15 minutes to 1 hour. Rinse with clean, warm water, and polish dry.
Polish with copper polish followed by glass wax. If a high polish is required dip a cloth into liquid wax and apply to the piece. When the piece is dry, buff lightly to a high gloss. This wax treatment also may be given to bronze pieces that are kept outdoors. Weathered bronze usually darkens; however, this is natural and does not harm the piece.
When clean, the color of bronze looks like brass only darker.
